Editing a video by editing its text

In text-based editing, the transcript is the edit: delete a sentence from the text and it leaves the video. It turns most fixes into reading.

What it is

The tool transcribes the video word by word and ties each word to its moment in the footage. Cutting words in the text cuts the video; correcting a word corrects the caption.

A workflow

When a timeline is still better

Text edits what is said. For what is only seen, such as a cut on a gesture, the exact frame a graphic lands on, or music timed to a movement, a timeline with layers is the right tool. Most videos need a little of both.

Short answers

Can I edit a video by editing its transcript?
Yes. In a text-based editor, deleting words from the transcript cuts them from the video, and correcting a word corrects its caption.
When is a timeline better than editing by text?
When the change is in what is seen rather than what is said: a cut on a gesture, the exact frame a graphic lands on, or music timed to a movement.
