How to make clips from a live stream on Twitch, Kick or YouTube
A stream is long and most of it is waiting. The clips are a few moments in it. These steps work with any tool.
Work from the past broadcast
Wait until the stream has ended and work from the saved broadcast (the VOD). How long a platform keeps past broadcasts depends on the platform and the account, so download or clip yours soon after it ends.
Rights: your stream, or someone else's
Your own stream is yours to clip, though music and footage you played in it may belong to others. Someone else's stream needs their permission, or an agreement such as a clipping programme they run. When in doubt, ask.
Webcam and screen in one frame
Gaming and screen streams carry two pictures: the screen and the streamer's webcam. In a vertical clip, put them one above the other, or follow whichever matters at that moment. In a wide clip, keep the stream's own layout.
Find the moments
- Reactions: a win, a fail, a surprise.
- Peaks in the chat or in the streamer's voice.
- A line worth quoting, a short story, a clear opinion.
Cut wide highlights as well as vertical shorts
A vertical clip is for Shorts, Reels and TikTok. A longer wide (16:9) highlight suits YouTube and your own channel, and keeps the whole screen readable.
Where ion fits, and where it doesn't
What ion does here
- Paste a link: YouTube, a Twitch or Kick past broadcast or clip, or any page or file with a video. One finished video, up to 3 hours. Use only videos you have the rights to.
- After the stream: This is a live stream. Paste the link once it has ended.
- Framing: Follows each shot: the speaker up close, two people stacked, or a screen with its webcam.
- Format: Vertical · 9:16 (Shorts, Reels, TikTok) or Wide · 16:9 (YouTube, X, LinkedIn). Wide clips keep the whole frame, so framing is the video's own.
- Each clip's length: Auto · 15–90 s, 10–30 s, 30–60 s, 1–2 min, 2–5 min or 5–10 min. Wide clips can also be 10–15 min or 15–30 min.
- Specific moments (optional): Leave it empty and ion picks the moments most likely to stop the scroll. For example: the moments about money and investing, or the funny parts.
- A score for each clip: How likely it is to stop the scroll: the hook, standing alone, the arc, a line worth quoting and the ending, out of 100.
- Price: The credits a job takes are shown before it starts. Every price is on the pricing page.
Where ion isn't the tool
- A stream while it's live. ion takes a stream once it has ended.
- A very large broadcast from a link: “This video is too big to fetch (over 4 GB). Upload it as a file instead.”
- YouTube links aren't always available: “YouTube links can't be fetched right now. Try again later, or download the video and upload the file.”
- Someone else's stream without their permission. Use only videos you have the rights to.
Short answers
- Can I clip a stream while it's still live?
- Some platforms let viewers clip a live stream as it runs. For finished clips with captions, work from the past broadcast once the stream has ended.
- Can I make clips from another streamer's broadcast?
- Only with their permission, or under an agreement they offer. Their stream, and the music and footage in it, belong to them and to others.
