How to make a voice-over video from footage without talking
A restaurant, a trip, a product, a flat for sale: often the footage has no one talking in it. A voice-over gives it a story; a music montage gives it a rhythm.
Shoot b-roll on purpose
Short, steady shots, each showing one thing: a wide shot to set the place, close-ups of the details, something moving. Hold every shot a few seconds longer than feels natural.
Write the narration to the shots
Line up the shots first, then write a sentence or two for each. Open with the reason to watch, say what can't be seen, and end with what to do.
Record your voice
A quiet room, the phone close to your mouth, headphones so the music doesn't leak into the mic. Record a sentence again rather than living with a stumble.
Cut to the beat
Cut on the music's beats, keep the music low under the voice, and burn in captions for viewers with the sound off.
Or skip the voice: a music montage
Some footage says enough on its own. A rhythmic montage of the best shots, cut to the music, with no narration at all, is a video too.
Where ion fits, and where it doesn't
What ion does here
- Voice-over: Filmed without talking? ion picks the best shots, cuts them to the music's beat, and you narrate over the edit.
- No talking: Just the pictures and the music: ion picks the shots and cuts a rhythmic montage, no narration.
- What it's about: All optional: you can just press Generate. What you choose helps ion pick the shots. Topic: Restaurant & food, Trip & place, Product, Real estate, Vlog or Other. Length: 15 s, 30 s, 60 s or 90 s. Pace: Energetic, Calm or Luxury.
- Suggest a script: ion writes a script from the shots. Fill in what's in square brackets yourself.
- Now your narration: The video plays while you record. Headphones and a quiet room work best. Re-record a part: Pick the part: it plays while you record just that.
- Upload an audio file: Recorded on your phone? M4A, MP3 or WAV, up to 50 MB.
- Done, carry on: ion adds captions, sets the music under your voice and fits the cut to your narration.
Where ion isn't the tool
- ion doesn't generate a voice. The narration is yours: you record it in the browser while the video plays, or upload an audio file.
- ion doesn't film anything new: it picks and cuts from the shots you upload.
